Castle in Dubrovnik

DSC_0239-1A rather impossible looking structure, perched upon solid rock jutting into the sea. I could imagine this castle looked pretty formidable, if you were looking up at from a ship of an invading fleet.

Edit: This structure is called Fort Lovrijenac, first built in the 11th century, in order to resist the Venetian rule. It had since then been rebuilt over and over again, the current structure was built in the 1600s with some reparations.

  1. Nice image! Do you know what year the castle was built? It doesn’t look like a typical castle — the walls seem very short and flat. I would hate to be an archer while standing up there!

    • Not sure when it was built, think the walls are taller on the inside, they’ve used some of the rocks as part of the internal wall. It’s like a tardis, but not quite like a tardis…
